Being stuck in a hair rut is the absolute worst. One way to breathe new life into your hair is by changing up the color. For fun ideas, check out this roundup of top hair color techniques and hair colors below. Who knows? One of them might just be what you’ve been looking for all along. Remember to take an image to your local salon so your colorist can help you achieve the look!
BALAYAGE: The Art of Natural Highlights
The French term "Balayage," which translates to "sweep" or "paint," perfectly encapsulates this highlighting technique. During a Balayage service, which is a highlighting technique, a colorist paints bleach or haircolor just on the surface of your hair freehand; he or she doesn’t saturate the entire section with hairdye. The result is soft, natural-looking, sun-kissed highlights that easily blend in as hair grows longer.
OMBRE: A Gradual Transformation
In this hair color technique, your root hair color gradually fades into a much lighter hair color at the ends, such as blonde. If your hair isn’t already dark, you may want your colorist to deepen your natural shade at the roots for a more dramatic Ombre. Hairstylist tip: Balayage is the technique while ombre is an end look. Your colorist will use the balayage technique to achieve an ombre.
HIGHLIGHTS: Adding Dimension and Depth
Highlights are sections of hair dyed lighter than your natural shade. They can be used to give hair dimension, accentuate facial features or slim down your face. They’re the opposite of lowlights, which are strands of hair that are dyed darker than your natural shade. To add highlights to your hair, your colorist may use one of two techniques: foil highlighting and Balayage.

The Perfect Routine for Balayage - Ombré - Colour Hair
Step 1: Colour with Care
Embrace the Color + Gloss technique for optimal results. Rather than applying permanent hair color all over, focus on your mid-lengths and ends using a semi-permanent hair gloss. This approach prevents excessive darkening of your hair over time, maintaining its vibrancy.
Step 2: Protection is Key
Frequent shampooing, salt and sun, swimming, tight hair ties, hairdryers, flat irons, and more all take their toll on color-treated hair. And while we can’t eliminate many of those things altogether, we can take steps to protect your color and prevent further fading and damage.
Be patient. If you can, wait a full 48 hours (after the initial post-coloring wash) to lather and rinse your newly-colored locks. This will give your hair’s cuticle time to recover from being opened during your color treatment.
Don’t shampoo too frequently. Shampoo can strip the natural oils from your hair, leading to overproduction from your oil glands as they try to compensate. Try replacing one of your regular washes with dry shampoo. The less you sud up, the less risk of fading. As a bonus, colored dry shampoo can help mask grown-out roots until you’re ready for another color treatment.
Watch your water temperature. We all love a hot shower, but we love that fresh, vibrant hair color even more. Have mercy on your hair by using cool water to wash and rinse it. Even if you can’t stand cool water for your whole shower, at the very least, finish up your shower with a cool rinse on your hair to help close the cuticle after washing. If you have curly hair, fill an empty spray bottle with water to spritz your curls every morning. (This hair care tip packs a double punch—cooler water is way better for your skin, too.)
Turn down the heat. Water temperature isn’t the only thing you’ll want to dial back. You’ll want to be mindful of how often you heat style your hair, too. Turn your blow dryer to a cooler setting, if possible, and limit your use of high-temp flat irons and curling tools. If you must use heat styling tools often, consider applying our Madison Reed styling and smoothing cream, Tame, formulated with argan oil, keratin and ginseng root. And be sure to see your hairstylist for regular trims to eliminate any split ends caused by flat irons and other heat tools.
Step 3: Nourish with Treatments
Integrate deep conditioning or protein treatments into your routine. These treatments rejuvenate dry and dull hair, restoring its strength post-colouring. Professional-grade products like Pro Boosts offer salon-quality conditioning at home.
Step 4: Enhance with Colour-Depositing Masks
Experience the magic of a color depositing hair mask like our Color Therapy. Hydrate and revive your dyed hair while depositing rich color. Choose shades that counteract brassiness or infuse warmth, depending on your desired outcome.
